World cycling in Banská Bystrica
Saturday, 19 September 2020
The second stage of the cycling race Tour of Slovakia with the finish in Banská Bystrica was originally intended to be a test event for competitions of young riders on two wheels during EYOF. However, the coronavirus changed the plans for the organizers of EYOF and the 64th edition Tour of Slovakia, too.
Eventually, Tour of Slovakia was held on the original date and on the planned roads with five WorldTour teams (Deceuninck-QuickStep, Bora-Hansgrohe, Sunweb, Israel Start-Up Nation and Cofidis), but without Peter Sagan and especially under strict safety measures. The second stage brought valuable experience for the organizers of EYOF, which they can use in next two years for the preparation of the event.
The stage with finish in Banská Bystrica was highlight on the 64th Tour of Slovakia. The hard track from Žilina was 206.6 km long. It finished at small hill on the cubes of Square of Slovak National Uprising by triumph of Nico Denz from Team Sunweb. He won sprint over a man in yellow jersey and later the overall winner of the event Jannik Steimle of Deceuninck-QuickStep. Denz celebrated his second career victory after the Tour de Vendée classic. “I believed in myself in the finish. After a long kilometres in the hills, I had good legs in the uphill sprint,” Denz said.
When he found out that young cyclists would be fighting for medals on some parts of this track on the EYOF 2022, he smiled: “Nothing easy for them.”
