Tuesday, 26 July 2022
The first medals at the EYOF 2022 in Banská Bystrica were awarded to swimmers. Hungarian Tamara Elekes topped the girls’ 400 m medley race. 14-year old dominated the race in a time of 4:52.69 min. “I am extremely happy and I don’t even know what to say,” said Elekes.
She entered the final with the fourth best time and improved her performance from the heats by more than six seconds. “It hurt,” said the exhausted swimmer. “I can barely breathe, but I’m happy that I can be here with my coach and my team and I can race.”
Elekes led more than two seconds before the silver medalist, Martine Damborg of Denmark. German Noelle Benkler finished third. “I’m very happy. It is a big thing for me, for my team and for Tamara,” coach Gábor Kovács praised Elekes. “She has it set up very well in her head. She is very strong, and that is why she won this gold.”
Right after the girls, the boys fought for medals at Štiavničky. They competed in the 400 m freestyle. The first gold medal winner was the Turkish Tolga Temiz, who set a time of 3:52.99 min. in the final. He described his feelings immediately after the triumph with two words: “Happiness, justice.” He then added: “It was good. The first 200 meters I was a little scared of my opponents, especially Bertoni, but I know how to swim the last 50 meters faster. I was waiting for that and finally took the gold.”
The Turk overtook the Italian, Filippo Bertoni. After the finish, the margin between them was only three hundredths of a second. Thanks to Arne Schubert, the Germans also go home with a bronze among the boys.
On Monday, the third collection of medals was awarded at the EYOF. In the 5000 m walk, the most valuable metal was won by the Spaniard Moreno Daniel Monfort in a personal best of 21:22.02 min. Slovakian Lukáš Rosenbaum, who celebrated his 15th birthday on Monday (23:42.57 min), came in 5th place. “I am very happy that I was able to participate in the EYOF and finish the race. Fifth place is amazing for me,” said Rosenbaum.
