Tuesday was marked by cycling on námestie SNP in Banská Bystrica. The program of the European Youth Olympic Festival included a time trial race. Starters in both categories completed the 8.4 kilometre course. The winner of the boy´s competition was sixteen-year-old Patryk Goszczurny with a time of 10:47.90 min. “I am very happy, I don´t even know how to express my joy,“ responded cyclist immediately after the victory.
“The time trial was tough, but I knew I could win,“ said exhausted and out of breath competitor, who was cycling and shaking as part of his recovery: “I´m still under stress and I have no words.“
The coach of the Polish cycling team at the EYOF Maciej Stanowicz was also extremely satisfied: “I am very happy. Patryk was first, Marceli fourth, he was only two seconds short of a medal, and a girl from our team, Anna Gaborska, was third. It´s a perfect day for us.“
The Poles prepared properly for the race in Banská Bystrica and used the knowledge gained: „We were here two weeks ago to familiarise ourselves with the track and we also went through it yesterday. We took a look on every turn from the right and the left. The conditions were perfect on the track, two weeks ago the asphalt wasn´t ready yet, but the organisers did a good job and now everything is fine,“ said Stanowicz.
The time trial winner also likes Slovakian cycling star Peter Sagan. “The best sprinter in the world,“ declared Goszczurny to the address of the Žilina native. After the Pole, the second best time was silver Czech Pavel Šumpík, who was behind by more than eight and a half seconds. The bronze was won by Briton Sebastian Grindley.
78 female cyclists started in the girl´s time trial. The winner was Briton Cat Ferguson with a performance of 12:11.58 min. Spain´s Paula Jessica Ostiz Taco finished second, 3.59 seconds behind. The successful Polish cycling Tuesday was highlighted by Anna Gaborska, who missed the gold by seven and a half seconds. “We believe in a successful race on thursday as well,“ Polish coach Maciej Stanowicz was pleased with the performance of his trainees. In two days (July 28) a race with a mass start is on the program. The girl´s track will be 57.8 km long, the boys will race for 65.8 km. Until then, Poles can celebrate. What will the celebration look like? “With champagne, of course,“ replied Stanowicz without hesitation.
