EYOF PLANTED NEXT TREES IN BANSKA BYSTRICA

Sustainability is one of the important pillars of this year’s European Olympic Festival in Banská Bystrica. The EYOF representatives led by the CEO Peter Hamaj and together with the mayor of Banská Bystrica Ján Nosko symbolically planted the first part of a total of 22 trees to support biodiversity and the creation of urban greenery on Tuesday 17 May 2022.
All trees were planted thanks to the organisation ZAaRES (Horticultural and Recreational Services of Banská Bystrica), especially in the area of the new athletic stadium. “Despite the bad weather, we planted the first planned part of the total number of 22 trees. Among them, you can find pine, elm, maple or ginkgo, and all the trees were donated to us by the Horticultural and Recreational Services of Banská Bystrica in cooperation with the city of Banská Bystrica,” says Zuzana Moravčíková, the EYOF’s director of sustainability. At the same time, she explained why the number 22 was chosen.
“We have symbolically chosen this number, because the event takes place in 2022. We are pleased that these 22 trees also contributed to the creation of urban greenery and building the legacy of a sustainable EYOF. It was the planting of trees that became one of the pillars of our green event. We are very grateful that the city, led by the mayor and the EYOF organising committee, took part in the event. Of course, we must not forget to thank the Horticultural and Recreational Services Banská Bystrica, without which we would not be able to carry out this event,” Moravčíková thanked at the end.
“As part of one of the successful participatory budget projects, we started planting 100 new trees for our city at the end of April. I am glad that I planted another 22 trees together with the members of the EYOF organising committee today. New pines, maples and ginkgo have been added around Hutná, Švermova Street and THK. The neighbourhood will be the centre of the main event of the European Youth Olympic Festival, which is fast approaching. Sustainability is also a part of the event so our goal is to minimize the impact on the environment as much as possible,” thanked the mayor of Banská Bystrica Ján Nosko.
