Less emission thanks to electric cars from Motor-Car

Friday, 14 January 2022

This year’s European Youth Olympic Festival will go down in history as the first EYOF to deal fundamentally with the impact of cations on the environment. One of the important points is traveling by electric cars from a partner Motor-Car.

“Organising and implementing such a large international event with a high participation of athletes, guests, delegates, coaches and, last but not least, the organisers brings, in addition to organisational challenges, a high burden on the environment. For this reason, the organising committee decided to make every effort to reduce and minimize the impact on the environment. That is why we are implementing a sustainable and green EYOF,” describes Zuzana Moravčíková, director of sustainable projects within EYOF.

Since mid-August, the organising committee has had a total of four Mercedes-Benz cars – three electric cars and one plug-in hybrid, with which it covered the total distance of 23,190 km needed to ensure the preparations for the event.

“We care a lot about the environment and we are already trying to pollute nature as little as possible. In cooperation with the Institute of the Environment, we were able to calculate the amount of emissions produced compared to a conventional internal combustion engine,” describes Peter Hamaj, Executive Director of EYOF.

The online carbon calculator (www.iep.sk) of the Institute of Environmental Policy (IEP), which is an analytical department of the Ministry of the Environment of the Slovak Republic, was used to calculate the carbon footprint. Emissions were calculated only for driving in all cars, which means that they are not included in the final amount in connection with the production, consumables or transport of the car to the point of sale.

By the end of 2021, the European Youth Olympic Festival had three electric cars (Mercedes Benz EQA 250 with a consumption of 17.7 kWh / 100 km) and one plug-in hybrid with a diesel engine (Mercedes Benz E300 de sedan with a weighted fuel consumption of 1.4 electricity consumption 15, 5 kWh / 100km). A total of 11,061 km was driven with the hybrid and 12,129 km with all electric cars.

Calculation of electric cars:

We divide the total number of kilometres covered by electric cars by three = 12 1929km / 3 is 4,043 km per electric car. Using one electric car with 17.7 kWh / 100km the total of 121 kg of CO2 is produced per vehicle, which in total represents 363 kg of CO2 emissions for all three electric cars.

Plug in hybrid calculation – The car will run 40 km on electricity and 700 kilometres on diesel. From the total number of kilometres, emissions per mileage were calculated for electricity, which is 5.4% of 11,061, which is 597.3 km, which at a consumption of 15.5 kWh / 100 km is 16 kg of CO2 emissions for driving on electricity, while the remaining 10.7 km of diesel with a consumption of 1.4 l / 100 km is based on 387 kg of CO2 emissions. In total, the plug-in hybrid has 403 kg of CO2 emissions. For the total number of 23,189 kilometres, the cars of the organising committee produced a total of 766 kg CO2 emissions.

To compare and present the number of emissions saved, the consumption was calculated for a diesel engine of the same consumption (140 kW), for a Mercedes-Benz A 220 4matic with an average consumption of 5.4 l / 100 kilometres. With the same ratio of kilometres as with the greener variant, we get the result of 3305 kg of CO2 emissions. In comparison, the organising committee saved a total of 2,539 kg of CO2 emissions per 23,189 kilometres.

What could be achieved for the saved emissions?

(Again, we follow the calculation of the carbon calculator from the iep.sk website):

  • Annual consumption of one average person (average consumption counts as 5 meals per day) in the form of one portion with beef, one portion with another type of meat (chicken, pork and others) and vegetables in each meal during the day = total production
  • 5 people who buy clothes several times a week
  • 47 nights in a five star hotel
  • Purchase of 10 personal electronics devices (mobile, laptop, smart watch, power bank, etc.) with an average exchange of each device after one year of use
