Reconstruction of the Ice Hockey Stadium will start shortly

Friday, 04 December 2020

One of the key sports venues for the XVI. European Youth Olympic Festival 2022 Banská Bystrica is undergoing a major reconstruction. The first works will start as early as mid-December. In July 2022, competitions in sports gymnastics will be held at the oldest roofed Ice Hockey stadium in Slovakia.

As part of the reconstruction, €5.5 million will be reinvested, of which €3.35 million is a subsidy from the Slovak Government in support of the EYOF. Thanks to the modernization, in a couple of months a quality sports ground fulfilling the conditions and trends of the 21st century will rise in Banská Bystrica.  Both arenas of the stadium will undergo reconstruction. The deadline for completion of the works is ten months from the handover of the construction site, which means next autumn.

In both areas the interior and the façade will be restored. In the main arena will be created also new entrance portal as well new grandstand with complete facilities, a restaurant and four cloakrooms.

“I believe that with this extensive reconstruction of the stadium we will manage to create a dignified sports ground,” said Banská Bystrica Mayor and President of the Organizing Committee of EYOF 2022 Banská Bystrica Ján Nosko.

The Ice Hockey Stadium in Banská Bystrica is the oldest covered arena for Ice Hockey and Figure Skating in Slovakia. Roofing was designed in the first half of 1965, installed in the second half of 1965 and was made available in 1966, less than ten years after the start of operation of the artificially cooled ice rink.
